If the soil has to be moved from one place to another, it should be classified before transport following Waste Classification Guidelines 2014. Classification Guidelines will go on the level of contamination within the soil and it’s physical and chemical properties. Sometimes, the soil will be recycled under resource recovery order or used on different sites for suitable conditions.

The soil classifications are: Excavated natural material (ENM), Virgin Excavated Natural Material (VENM), General Solid Waste (GSW), Restricted Solid or Hazardous Waste. Significant penealites apply for inappropriate disposal of contaminated soils and disposal costs can be significant, it is recommended that this factor be addressed early on in the construction timeline.
