VijayDurg Fort

Is the oldest fort in Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as “Gheria” as it is situated in the village “Girye”.Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from Adilshah of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as “Vijay Durg” as the then Hindu solar ear’s name was “Vijay”. Vijay means Victory. Sprawling over an area of 48 acres, Vijaydurg, fort of victory, was once seized by the British following a bloody battle. They renamed it Fort Augustus. A dilapidated board at the entrance of the fort relates its history. One of the best views of the fort is from the jetty. The fort stretches out into the sea and a walk inside its precincts is worthwhile.Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj added triple rows of huge walls, umpteen towers and spacious inner buildings to it and strengthened it in the 17th century.

Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings. This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan.

Sindhudurg-Padmagad fort

Huge sea rocks of Malvan coast have shouldered the responsibility of two Forts Sindhudurg & Padmagad on their broad chest. The name of the fort is given to the Sindhudurg district. Tourist from all over the world visit throughout the year to see this Maratha glory. The fort was built with the help of huge rocks on the Kurte Island which amazes people & one appreciates imaginative power of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In 1664 Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj erected this fort on 44 acres of land. In Sindhudurg Fort there is ‘Shri Shiv Rajeshwar temple’ of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Also there are temples of Hanuman, Jarimari mandir and Goddess ‘Bhavani Temple’. Impressions of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj fingerprints found to be preserved here on one of the wall. Also lies, inside the fort worth seeing temples of Bhavani Mata, Shambhu Mahadev, Jirimiri & Mahapurush. All are in good conditions

List of activities on Malvan Tour

  •  Srkeling is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped tube called a snorkel, and usually swim-fins. Use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for extended periods of time with relatively little effort. Snorkeling is a popular recreational activity. The primary appeal is the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting without the complicated equipment

  •  Scuba Diving in India there are a very few places where scuba diving can be done and Malvan is one of them. Due to its relatively clear sea waters, Malvan serves as a perfect spot for scuba diving (done mostly with surface oxygen supply) and snorkelling. Near the outer walls of Sindhudurg fort one can see lots of live corals and beautiful marine life under the sea.

  • Parasailing also known as parascending, or "parakiting", is a recreational kiting activity where a person is towed behind a vehicle (usually a boat) while attached to a specially designed canopy wing that reminds one of a parachute, known as a parasail wing. The manned kite's moving anchor may be a car, truck, or boat. The harness attaches the pilot to the parasail, which is connected to the boat, or land vehicle, by the tow rope. The vehicle then drives off, carrying the parascender (or wing) and person into the air. If the boat is powerful enough, two or three people can parasail behind it at the same time. The parascender has little or no control over the parachute. The activity is primarily a fun ride, not to be confused with the sport of paragliding.

  •    Water Sports  where one can enjoy rides like Jet-Ski, Banana boat ride, Bumper boat, Kayaks etc. Best time to visit Tsunami island for water sports is during high tide when the small island is partially submerged under the water (till knee length).

  •  Night Boat ride Locals can arrange for a night boat ride for a price depending upon the size of the group and if the weather conditions are right. However please remember the boats would be coming back by 21:00 as then the night fishing would start. For those who want to see Dolphin Treks and Trails would recommend a boat ride early in the morning. If possible visit Tarkarli by April end to reduce the disappointment of not seeing a Dolphin.

  •   Ayurveda Centre - A little before Tarkarli beach is Ashwini Ayurvedic Center, that offers a host of services such as Relax with Reflexology, Navarakizhi, Abhyangam, Padabhyanga, Taruni skin wrap etc

  •   Tsunami Island near Devbagh beach is a small island on the delta of Tarkarli river. This beach cum island also is the place to enjoy boat ride in the backwaters of Tarkarli River. This island is NOT formed due to Tsunami waves, But due to this imaginary name it is a popular tourist destination
  •  White Beach Resort It's actually a improvised house that one of the local villagers has converted into humble home stay option. Very close to the the river on the rear of this house. The house owner could arrange for water sports at Tarkarli and Malvan. White Beach resort is around 41 km from Kudal or 20km from Malvan. It's at Tondavali village, Suruchbaan forest.

Malvan Marine Wildlife Sanctuary

The Malvan Marine Wildlife Sanctuary was declared on 13 April 1987, with a core zone of 3.182 km² and buffer zone of 25.94 km² total area being 29.122 km². The core zone includes the Sindhudurg fort, Padamged island and other submerged rocky structures. The north eastern border of the buffer zone is 50 m from the seashore near Malvan port, while on the east it is a semi-circular sandy beach 500 m parallel to the shore of Malvan, in the south it is near Mandel rock, and in the west touches the Malvan rock.

Village Folk Dance

As I waited for the local ST bus to take me to the my next destination, I saw a large procession drawn by the local villagers. Seems to be some kind of wedding or a celebration. Huge drums, lazem and different groups doing a rethymatic formation. Delight to all the on lookers (see pic below). The best part was in all these dancers it was all done by the men folk. The women folk stood with a brass pot on their heads all dressed up. It was a spectacular display of colours, coordination. A treat for my eyes.
