Varugad Fort Information
Varugad Fort, an old but strong citadel with all the fortification, stands still and makes us know its history. Varugad Fort is located in Satara District, Maharashtra, India. It is about 3000 feet above sea level, an easy grade one-day fort trek in Satara District. The Fort consists of 12 small villages called “Vadyas”.
- Starting Point: Bhairavnaath Temple, Phaltan Taluka, Satara District, Maharashtra.
- Trek Gradient: It is a beautiful place to visit as beginners. It is a comfortable one-day mountain fort trek.
- Water Recourses: Drinking water is available in the Fort throughout the year.
- Best months to visit: Monsoon is suggested to be the best season to visit the Fort.
How to reach Varugad Fort?
- Phaltan taluka is the main junction. From here, there are various routes to reach the Fort.
- From Phaltan, one can take a St bus to Girvi village. From there, at a distance of five km, one can reach the base village and begin the Fort's hike.
- Dahiwadi is the other route to reach the Fort from Phaltan. This route will take you to the Fort with an unpaved trail. While the Girvi trail is a right tar road.
- From Satara District, one can reach Phaltan by local transport also which is available at regular intervals. It is at a distance of 64km.
- From Pune, it is about 137 km by road route.
• Mumbai to the Fort is about 280 km, taking about 5 to 6 hours to reach till the Fort.

Varugad fort trek begins with a door towards the Fort near the base point of the Fort. Moving ahead from this entrance, we can see a huge water tank present near it. This water tank has water throughout the year. Moving forward from this water tank, one can see another water tank whose walls are well maintained. Besides this water, then one can see a small “Shivling” under a huge tree shed. After this, one will come across “Bhairavnaath’s Temple.” the temple is huge and well maintained. The villagers worship this temple.
On the Fort's backside, which is away from the trail, one can see a grave present. Within two hours, will reach the first door of the Fort.
Another water tank is seen while approaching the Fort is known as “Pandavkalin. This water tank is said to be built overnight by the Pandavas. The history of this Fort states that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built this Fort in 1674. This Fort was then under the Peshwas from 1811. All the forts doors constructed under the guidance by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj were built-in the Gaumukhi architectural style. The citadel door has also been built in the same manner. The citadel is approached from the summit itself, and The defence is still fortified as it was in the old days.
